i watched 1 and 2 on the plane home. i watched a little star trek on my nano waiting in line for a cab. there were none. the weather was warm for this time of year. all day today in florida i drove with my windows down. driving with the radio on and the windows down has got to be one of life’s great pressures. and it makes me want to move out of the city just so i can have that day after day. i got up and counted left over merch from last night’s show while i ate steak and fries. i said to the waiter, can i have my fries served in a cone like frites. it was then i realized i missed new york.
the show last night was a rousing success. i got to apologize and put on a free show. we made shirts just for that night, and we sold about seventy of them. what’s left got sent to indie merch store. so look for those next week. we sold hats for the first time and they’re all gone. i kept one. i like it. it’s like i have all these dopplegangers.
kids from the message board came to the venue at mic check with free pizza and much enthusiasm. we fed ourselves and then the line. the girls handed out everyone their macademia shirts and i handed out actionville shirts. two kids from the boards ran the merch table. i was crazy nervous about it but they were super responsible and did a great job. the crew just kind of hung out at the table the whole night and they’d all applaud anytime someone tipped them. they made 50 dollars in tips and that helped one of them pay for his flight as he flew in from new orleans just for the show.
afterwards we all went to the village inn (a nice denny’s) and i held court. i basically asked all the message board members what they liked or disliked about the boards, my new set, anything really. they seemed iffy on the remixes. they liked care bear but not the toned down hijack with radionhead samples. they liked to scream hijack but i dont.
the hardcore fans want the music to always sound the same. i want everything to sound different. i think this happens to lots of bands that split up. the fans don’t want change. but change has happened. and there’s not much anyone can do about it. so either the music stops or it doesn’t. i’ll guess we’ll just have to wait and see how everyone receives the new record. u’ve liked the four tracks i’ve leaked so far. here’s hopin.
i told them all sorts of secret stuff because it’s fun for them to gloat and hint, or glint, later on. like the name of the sixth record or what the seventh record’s about or the secret song not going on this album, or the mc chris cartoon or the new cartoon on as this spring. i royally spilled the beans. i like rewarding the message board folks. and if you ever got to meet all these kids you’d be happy about the board’s existence. it’s like a dock in the middle of lake. one of those floaty wooden islands that you’d swim too kinda scared shitless.
the vibe was so right that i wasnt charged for dinner, another board member paid the whole tab and i got the robot claw prize first try. gave it to the board member named what-a-noob. then we took group photos. then we hugged and went back to life. back to reality.
things didnt really pan out for me as far as love’s concerned. my parents hint at it in the annual christmas letter. but sadly there’s nothing for them confirm or report on. i realized that this christmas was not about me. and maybe i wasnt supposed to get my christmas wish. maybe this year it was for them. the people that pay my bills and go to my shows. the people that give me this life. im glad i can find ways to repay everyone. there’s a sadness to it all. telling everyone about how mc chris ends at the village inn three days after christmas on a warm night in florida. we’d all like it to keep going but it wont. everything evolves.
