grand theft auto four my review. (spoilers!!!)

Filed under: mc chris — @ 2:12 pm
mc chris
usually i dont like to review a game unless i finished as it gives me a reason to finish what i started but seeing as i’ve burned a new circle into my plasma and have big bags under my eyes and i’m only ten percent done, i will make an exception. here’s my list of first impressions.

1. he runs down the stairs just like in uncharted. awesome!

2. bodies have weight. when he gets hit by a car, he really gets hurt!

3. people really get hurt and there is blood. if you plow into a person they explode.

4. he just walks through doors? no loading screen?!!! that’s evolution. my mind is blown every time he walks off the street and into a room.

5. he can buy anything in the store he sees? awesome. i hate that in dead rising there is stuff in the stores you CANT use.

6. michelle in your peacoat. i’m sorry i got so wasted in that bar. thanks for putting out on the second date. i’m glad that u like the diner in my neighborhood, but it sucks that you like bowling because i’m no good at it. no good at pool either. have tried darts and i killed everybody in the strip club i don’t know why.

7. i was acting really peaceful and following traffic lights and stuff and then i stabbed a biker in a crosswalk and i just went kook.

8. if i’m already having to redo missions at ten percent there is no way i’m gonna finish this game. unless i bring it with me on warped.

9. my phone is blowing up, how do i find time to do it all?? the time pressure is kinda lame and dead rising esque. i cant wait till they loosen the reigns a little bit. and while i played i was getting real life phone calls and people were delivering packages and it was always during cutscenes. play this game when you will not be disturbed or you will go nuts.

10. it’s cool that they let you ride the bike, boat, and helicopter before it happens in the story, as a phone tutorial. i cannot drive the helicopter for shit. and i kept on crashing it. i wish that i could steer the cars siaxis stylie like in mario kart. i was playing yesterday and the clouds wet away and the sun came out and i was in a really dark alley, on the lookout, but it was too dark so i had to pause and i put in mario kart and played 150 cc with the bikes, trying to figure out stunts etc. i feel like gta driving is jerky and not fluid and natural, i’m always recovering it seems like. and i wish the accelerator was more smooth too. i’m always stop and start kinda rocking along. i wish it was easier to hold a low mph so i could seem more natural if i wanted it too.

11. the prostitute’s language i found offensive. i still perused her wares.

12. i was amazed by the tv in my apartment. i was not expecting kat williams and ricky gervais to pop up. i like how 9/11 and the election have found their way into the story too. also neko’s character is pretty awesome thus far. his story makes me want to play the entire game because it’s kinda set up as a croatian whodunnit or something. is he serbian? is he who he is because of the success of the borat impersonation? when the game started i couldnt understand a word he said. oh and i love the european dance station. why is music in english so boring to me right now?

13. aiming and cover is all awesome. sucks that i got arrested though and lost my shotgun, uzi, gun and knife. wtf? you really gotta lay low with the cops and not get caught. it’s cool that almost nothing ticks them off, no small violations like running red lights or speeding. they dont care it seems unless you really cause an accident or kill somebody or shoot your gun. it’s cool that they’re not so easily aroused
given how lame it is to get caught.

14. saving sucks. i need to find more safe houses is all but if i’m doing missions in bohan that’s a long drive.

15. this game is a lot like my life. i’m taking cabs when i shouldn’t and i’m staring out the window. i love the camera option. how you can kinda change the camera repeatedly and make your own movie. i love the circle button for this reason.

16. graphics: everyones saying fail cuz i got ps3. i have a feeling that has more to do with playing with me xbl that whether or not one game is better than the other. i’ll tell you what i’m not a fan of on the ps3, the glistening. everything is always covered in slime, there is line of illumination over everything. that doesnt look so hot and sometimes the character graphics are too much motion capture not enough making it not look weird, but overall it’s pretty great. i find with this and uncharted, if i squint it looks better. i have had no problems though with frames or slippage or any of that stuff whatever it is. my game plays smooth. it’s oblivion that freezs on me in inopportune moments. i must say the cars look great and the fact everythign reflects off them is mind blowing.

17. the jamaicans make me laugh every scene. and i like the guy peeing in the corner when i was chasing that dude through the projects. a game’s success truly lies in the details. and this game is detail overload.

18. everyday people want me to get online and the people next door want to pay me for my internet, and i just keep putting it off and slacking on it. i don’t know why. is it possible that someone so entrenched in the blogosphere is a wee bit antisocial?? why am i such a solo mission gamer?

19. waypoints on the map rules. gps is the shiz. if only you could just teleport like in olbivion. i’m sorry but i secretly hate driving. every car seems to be out of control with me. but i’m especially bad at it. it’s like in pineapple express when he’s plowing into cars behind and in front. or was that spaceballs? on both mario kart and gta i’m feeling the motorcycles. i like being able to not be such a blundering behemoth. i like to weave in and out of traffic like it’s akira.

20. i wasn’t joking when i said magic hour. it is either dawn or dusk for most of this game. which makes everything feel like a seventies movie somehow, especially french connection complete with train track shadows on the pavement. the pavement in itself is a star. look at how cracked it is. and it’s isnt repeated squares, it’s true to life and different and random. it just feels like game makers actually stopped for a second and finally used the real world as inspiration. right down to the beer garden in steinway. there’s a beer garden in queens that my friends, including the band, the steinways, would go drink at, and it’s in the game. i think the game starts in green point. right north of where i live and the diner right by neko’s house is just like the diner around the corner from me in williamsburg. and coney island looks all depressing and shut down like it is real life. and michelle informs me they’re building an amusement park there. just like in real life. sooo coool.

oh and don’t forget to pre-order my new album and go see me at the ucb theater this saturday at midnight!

guess what i’m gonna do all day? welL rehearse a little bit for saturday night’s show at the upright citizen’s brigade theater. (do you have reservations??? http://newyork.ucbtheatre.com/shows/1701) but other than that i’m gonna go check out this place call liberty city or something. maybe you heard of it. honestly my net news wire things is only gta articles. the world has gone mad. two questions: how many people called in sick today? and will this affect iron man’s box office take and if so, what does this mean for movies and games? it’s always fun to witness a cultural tide shift.

thanks to everyone that bought preorders. you paid for mixing and mastering and pressing last night already. the cd’s price tag is high but it will compensate for those that choose not to support me and it will keep me alive on warped tour this summer and it will also help pay off my merch debt because there is a ton of merch coming and i bought it all on credit, so thanks for helping me inch towards being square. don’t think of it as buying a cd, think of it as supporting a cause.

what’s my cause? my music isnt just awesome raps, it also hopes to incite a flurry of self improvement in those that listen. it’s about rebuilding ur confidence and taking charge in life. it’s about being cool with who you really are. and from what i see and read from you every day it’s a message that bears repeating. cuz kids are easily convinced again and again that they are not good enough and my music is all about telling them that not only do they kick ass but they have the power to become awesome within themselves. i hope that all makes sense. that’s what i think when i see someone with an mc tat anyhow. now go pre-order this mother!

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 43: Sprung

Filed under: hipster please — @ 1:29 pm

Spring is a time of rebirth. At least that’s what I am told.

Mostly for me it’s just about yard work.

Still, for the purposes of this podcast, I’ll buy into the “time of renewal” thing. That same line of thinking lends itself to the whole springtime romance pastiche, and that’s some fertile musical ground.

This episode features some songs that touch on both – lyrically- or strictly musically-speaking – and some that fall well outside the boundaries of the established theme. I hope you don’t mind. While it may be a little thematically shaky, I still think it’s pretty damned cohesive. Plus it boasts some tracks that, I’d wager, you haven’t heard before.

It certainly ain’t Vivaldi, but I think you’ll find it to your liking.

Download Radio Free Hipster Ep. 43: Sprung [hosting provided by Antisocial] Size: 46.3 MB Running Time: 50:34

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – “Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)
Baddd Spellah is my muscular gardener and Beefy my strapping pool boy.

Track 1: The Four Eyes – “Any Way You Want It
People play a lot of golf in the spring, right? Otherwise, this episode starts off on a shaky foot.

Z’s 1st interlude: “At least here in the south.”
A southern spring is an odd thing. While you usually think of springtime as being resplendent with color, ours is fairly monotone. It’s all shades of yellow.

Track 2: Uncle Monsterface – “Lionfist Journey
“Fuckin’ great band!”

Track 3: Spheres of Chaos – “Megafauna
Ptradactyl Squad, for those of you not in the know, is a game music Web label that boasts an amazing array of original tracks and albums. It’s definitely worth your time to check ‘em out.

Track 4: The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets – “One-gilled Girl”
Apparently spring is also a time for inter-species romance. I’m not here to judge.

Track 5: Pete Miser – “So Sensitive”
With songs about robots and iPhones, Pete makes uniquely nerd-friendly hip-hop.

Track 6: Ultraklystron – “This Is Why I’m a Junglist
I am also a Junglist. As is Ali G.

Track 7: Elfonso – “Labyrinth Zone
And the award for Best Use of a Banjo in a Geek Rock Song goes to…

Track 8: The Ranger – “Rap Bukowski
Okay, I’ll admit that this track may lack the upbeat, spark of most of the other tracks, but you can’t deny its own intrinsic value. Though I’m still a little ambivalent about the vocal effects, The Ranger manages to make a nerdcore anthem like no other.

Z’s 2nd interlude: “A brand new instrumental from my friend Steve BC.”
While I sometimes feel a little bad for choosing a song I really dig simply to talk over, Steve always offers his beats up as background music. I’m a bit of a music snob when it comes to instrumentals, but damned if his tracks don’t always satisfy!

Track 9: The Cars – “The Little Black Egg”
I pulled this off The Cars Anthology. It seemed just appropriate enough for inclusion.

Track 10: Tanner4105 – “Doug Mix”
This is probably my favorite mix that Tanner’s ever done. It’s just so over the top!

Track 11: Dual Core – “Fantastic Four”
I actually did clear this with eighty and 64 before uploading this episode, just so everyone knows. The album’s not been released yet, but when it does make its way into this cold, cruel world, I highly recommend you give it a good home. This song is just one of the many reasons why.

Track 12: Jack Westmore – “Ace of Spades (Remix)”
A Motorhead remix is a beautiful thing.

Track 13: Split Seven Ways – “Potions Abuse Part 1”
I always hate editing songs, but the ep. was running long and this track had the unfortunate honor of being both the last track of the second set and having a very prominent break between movements. Still, I think you oughtta check out Wizrocklopedia to grab the whole EP and the Split Seven Ways MySpace for more excellent free tracks.

Z’s final interlude: “Be forewarned.”
I can’t imagine any of you would be surprised to hear a song with swears in it here at RFH, but sometimes I like to at least feign propriety.

Track 14: Jonathan Coulton – “First of May”
This is easily JoCo’s most vulgar and inappropriate song. It is also my favorite.

If this episode taught me anything, it’s that I need to do another theme-free edition of Radio Free Hipster. A potpourri episode, if you will.

I’m already looking at a couple of songs to potentially include. There are some folks we haven’t heard ’round these parts in a while – cats like id obelus, Whore Moans, and MPFM – and I’ve got some handsome new mash-ups I’ve been sitting on for a while now as well. So expect ep. 44 to be a bit looser, a bit more artistically malleable.

Unless, of course, I get distracted and totally change my mind.

Could happen.

i can’t help it i caved. a couple things. it handles REALLY well, more so than any other mk game i’ve ever played. any cartoon racer pretty much. the music is awesome. those japanese love their synth samba. kinda lame that it’s all levels from old versions of the game. thought i had deja vu for a second. i hope there’s more new stuff like wario’s gold mine. that actually gave me vertigo, felt like the beast or even the son of the beast. so far it’s very cool. lots of tracks to unlock before tomorrow night at midnight. i’m still not online but i’ll let everyone know when i am.

Ultraklystron

So, I spent time today (when not selling monitors at work, chatting on the phone to Danielle, dropping Mathew off at a friend’s place nor napping as part of recovering from the ear/throat infection that requires huge Augmentin pills to fight it,) looking over old blogs and newsgroup entries, initially Danielle’s (she’s gone through my blogs and such, and I find that really sweet actually – she’s probably one of a handful of people, if not the only person by besides myself, who has) with her blessing/at her request. However, that kind of got me looking back at my own old entries in this blog, and it’s really well, sort of surprised me how much everything’s changed.

My old circles of friends have radically rearranged themselves, people have left, people have split off – sometimes under happy circumstances, sometimes under somewhat more dramatic ones. Many people who I thought would be key friends on into my old age have disappeared into the ether (ok, I’m sure I could e-stalk them and shoot ‘em an email, but well, I don’t.) Shoot, even the places where I hang out have changed – my favorite arcade is long gone, the anime store I shop at has new owners and I stopped going to the anime club before I even had my AA done. I’ve gone from being a community college student cranking out his first nerdcore album and working on anime reviews to a community college graduate looking for a school to transfer to finish a 4-year-degree because he knows music is not as likely to pay the bills at the end of the day as a CS degree. I barely write for Toon Zone anymore – pretty much only doing con coverage because well, I do still go to cons, though even there, I’m not sure if the passion is there in the same way anymore. I went from being obscenely prolific as a musician to somewhat more constrained and picky to needing a break from it to sort of playing with it again, but as much more personal, hobby-like endeavor. I went from being a guy who kind of attempted dating a few times (and who failed hard at it,) to someone who has, barely, managed to maintain a very rewarding long-distance relationship with a wonderful, beautiful woman. In short, I’ve grown up a up a bit, but I still feel a bit like this Weezer refrain:

“The world has turned, and left me here.”

And well, some of things that have stayed stationary aren’t the things I would have wanted to stay still. I’ve certainly taken longer with school than I should have, and than I wanted to have – I’ll be lucky to finish my degree before the middle of 2010 – that’s 8 years for a 4-year-degree. Shows I blogged about over three years ago are still unlicensed, and well, I know by this point, in this industry where one major company is dead (Geneon) and another maybe on the brink (ADV,) they will probably never turn up legally in the US.

Of course, on the flipside, maybe not all that much has changed either. I may have a 90 something DVD backlog, but the fact is I drop in any of those discs, and I’m still enraptured by the content. Once I had the antibiotics in my system, I was gradually feeling ok enough to watch some Genshiken (the boxset of which I snagged back in 2007 at Kumoricon,) and well, it still speaks to me. I maybe less Sasahara now, and more Kousaka (except my girlfriend loves anime and games in addition to fashion,) but the emotional connection is still there. Additionally, between being laid up and reading those old blog posts, I can honestly say that while my circles of friends of have changed, what we do isn’t a whole lot different – we go to arcades (RIP Illusionz, Gameworks needs a Para Para machine,) we go to restaurants afterwords, we go to movies and we hang out. I may no longer be otaku or nerdcore TO THE EXTREME – I think 8 cons last year did some long term damage to all that, but the fact is that’s still a part of me.

And well, as I look to the future I know more will change. Before the end of 2008 I should be at or atleast accepted to a university to finish my degree, I’ll likely be out of my parents’ house, my parents might very well be in a new house, and well, as such, most every tie I have right now will probably be gone in the next year, atleast in a day to day sense. I’ll probably be in a new city, on my own, in a new school, making new friends, eating at new places, discovering new things. It’s sort of emotionally exhausting past a certain point as well, or atleast is to reflect on it. However, while it’s overwhelming, it’s because I know that by the time all is said and done, I’ll be a man with degree, a real job (hopefully,) and well, that era of even relating to something like Genshiken or Honey and Clover or as anything more than “I can remember being that guy – that sucked/rocked” will be gone. At that point, as long as I can dodge relating to Koshiro from Koi Kaze, I’ve got it made.

Well, I’ll have it made if somethings don’t change, like Danielle. I doubt I’ll ever find another person who can jump between Aqua Teens, Loveless, Velvet Underground, xxxHolic, Harry Potter, Atlus games, Kanye West, Tim and Eric, hexidecimal HTML color jokes, internet memes and more. I’d venture that’s a pretty unique taste/interest set. And I hope for once, I keep in touch with atleast some of my current friends – I’ve known some of them for closing on 8 years now. That’s pretty much the longest I’ve known people. Maybe that’s a sign they’re worth knowing in the long term, even if they aren’t local to me anymore. I mean, it’s not like it’s hard to keep in touch in an era of constant connection to communication.

To future me, who will inevitably come back and read this blog post in a few years, you better have gotten off your can and done what you’ve gotta do. If you’re still working computer retail and living with your folks, you’re doing it wrong. Don’t “become an hero”, but recognize that you failed. FLUNKED, even. And yeah, I know those memes and references are dated future me, but don’t act like didn’t laugh at it at the time. ;)

PS: Oh, technology’s gotten awesome since I’ve started writing a blog though, so that’s one change I’m all about no matter what. Yay for having a laptop with more power than the computer I wrote all of my pre-nerdcore music on (yet uses vastly less energy,) and then owning a desktop that’s several times more powerful than that, with the knowledge that by the time I’ll need to do an upgrade to my computer, I’ll probably be replacing it with something that uses half the wattage, yet provides me with about 16 times more processing capacity (if the program is multithreaded.) Oh, and multi-gigabyte flash media. 16 gigabytes for 50 dollars? Ah yeah…

I bet future me will be laughing at this point, as he reads this post on a solar-powered quantum computer with a holographic display and terabytes of hybrid flash/DNA storage.

fudge nuts!

i burned my oblivion life meters into my plasma. oy. i had been real good about not leaving it on etc. spacing out about it, but i forgot not to play for long stretches. and with oblivion it’s like eight hours goes by like whoosh. i can’t help it. i’m in the thieves guild but i use all my dark brotherhood gear. i landed in lewyinn to steal a ring from the countess and it was totally easy cuz i pickpocketed a guard’s key as he made patrols outside. i was a pickpocketing fool and the mrs. was none the wiser but old papa bear woke up when i tried to pinch his secret door key and then i flew out of there and jumped off the balcony like john wilkes booth. my athletic ability is pretty awesome so i just jump over everybody like i’m the mask.

i’m collecting bear pelts because i got kicked out of the fighter’s guild. like in real life i must have everyone’s acceptance. so i plan on joining all the guilds. i can’t wait to be a mage and pick mushrooms and flowers and turn it into invisibility potions.

i went and saw roo and dales last night at the ucbt. i bust my gut. all of it was really funny and awesome. cracked out might be moving out to LA along with everybody else. they’ll be missed. who will sublet my crib! (here come the offers…) gemberling wants to play all the old lucasfilm games, like sam and max and other ones. i told him to get an emulator and he said he had, but if anyone knows what he’s talking about, he’s in my top friends. hook him up with old school lucasfilm games. i was like, like loom? i think he means zak mckracken and maniac mansion and the like. i want apple IIe emulator so i can play sabotage and karateka on green screen. yeah i’m old. :(

good news tho! i got tons of presents from my wish list. i watched the alvin and chipmunks movie today. thanks to everyone that hooked me up with free shit! that rules! i was expecting it to happen maybe on birthday if i blogged about it, so it was a nice surprise. i still haven’t received my glasses tho from ebay. i prefer mindless corporations when it comes to shipping. thanks again everybody!

detailed reviews are coming in from people i leaked the record to. everyone’s really complimentary. so i feel kinda relieved and relaxed. enough that i burned some meters in me plasmar.

oh i forgot to say, my window was open and i arrived at this town in the game, and it was dark and raining. and in reality at the same time, a cold wind came in from the river outside and the whole thing was really creepy and spooky and awesome!
