Nerd News In Brief

Filed under: hipster please — @ 3:10 pm

It’s been one of those weeks at work where I feel totally unmotivated.

Actually, I reckon that describes all my weeks at work. What can I say? I am nothing if not consistent.

Thankfully, Matt has found a new position for me at a forward-thinking firm that values my unique strengths.

Graphs and shit are forthcoming.

  • An open letter to Sanrio: You guys really need to put a stop to this shit. True, it provides Church with a never-ending supply of nerd ink links to hit me with, but I’m afraid it’s strayed into the realm of the ridiculous.
  • Not nerdy, just news: Earlier this week I received a message from mash-up masterminds Phoenix Jukebox. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one, but that doesn’t make me love them any less. Hit their MySpace for samples, and sleep content in the knowledge that they’ll pop up on Radio Free Hipster soon.
  • Cross-Wired: Last Saturday Wired’s Listening Post dropped an interesting interview with Dan Lamoureux about his Nerdcore For Life documentary. Be sure to check the comments for an additional measure of vitriol from both sides of the stylistic fence. Oh, and I’m expecting a diss track from writer Angela Watercutter for scooping her 4 days prior re: the PAX screening. It’s on like this.
  • Clash of the Titans: Myf and SDX recently kicked off a 5 round rap battle at the new Rhyme Torrents. Dragon seemed to be the winner of the first round (by a slim margin), with the second coming… uh… soon? I sure as hell hope so.
  • Heartbroken: Matt regretfully informed me that WRock outfit Ginny and the Heartbreakers have just announced their break-up. As the girls were among the first WRockers to agree to be on the Old Nerdy Bastard comp, I hold a special affection for the group. WRock just won’t be the same without ‘em.
  • 8 days a week: With the release of Random’s The 8th Day a mere week away, Ran has announced a limited edition of the album. This rare DVD-case release is limited to 88 units, and boasts additional artwork, liner notes, and a poem. Plus, if you play your cards right, you can get it a bit earlier then the standard release. This is only open to members of Ran’s Yahoo! group, so join up and get in while the gettin’ is good.
  • In a related story: If you’re looking for a taste of what this new album offers, check out Chicago hip-hop blog Fake Shore Drive for a leak of the track “Exhale” featuring Naledge of Kidz in the Hall and scratching by DJ Akshun. You have nothing to lose but your summertime blues.
  • The gorilla, the gaucho, the cap’n, and the rest: For those of us outside their native Dallas-Forth Worth area, the dapper gents of the Rivercrest Yacht Club were nice enough to post videos of their latest gig to YouTube. Apparently the former MC Router was also performing at Lola’s on the evening in question. It’s a small world after all.
  • He wants your whole set: And while you’re ‘Tubin,’ check out the latest submission from Doctor Popular. Doc has taken up the WuChess Video Challenge, and it demands your immediate attention. Be sure to give him ample love. The Ken Burns effect reference alone is worth some acknowledgement.
  • Bead sprites, chiptunes, and other local delicacies: And now onto news of another doctor, Doctor Octoroc. Most of you know Doc Oc for his excellent chiptune contributions to various GM4A compilations (not to mention his phenomenal cover art for their Here Comes A New Challenger release), but did you know he’s also a crafter? Check out his newly revamped site for info on his beautiful, handmade bead sprites. Then head over to Etsy and buy stuff!
  • Genghis Con: And if you find yourself at either of the major Baltimore geek conventions in the immediate future – Otakon (Aug. 8th–10th) or 32 Bit Genocide (Aug. 16th) – look for Octoroc plying his wares. He’ll be I attendance, what about the rest of you?
  • Do you find yourself not knowing the words to songs?: This week’s closing video comes courtesy of Church. He found the following ad for RealWizardWrock.com over at blip.tv, and shared it with me. And now I shall share it with you. May the circle be unbroken.

the new bus had a cold in it. so i got the sniffles then the sneezes then it was straight up stuffed. tuesday the bus pulled out of the girl zone and we could finally get back to business. we barely got merch. but we do have booty shorts. i thought i lost my laundry yesterday and freaked cuz i was sockless. socks are gold. but i just went to the vans tent and asked for socks and ended up getting new shoes and a few shirts. i dont know what their sweat shop status is. i’ll worry about it after i get some new new balance.

the vans guys that had worked the tent knew me from my set, i feel like almost all merch hands have seen it. everyone nods at me and is cool. i feel like i won over this place. the bbq band (longway out of the oc) has been like brothers to me. they cook every night and i’ve gotten into the habit of coming and saying hi right before everyone shows up. i usually score free food. last night i scored five shrimps! i chomped them down after exploring the river down the hill. the sun had set so you could just see the mountain range’s silhouette. the smell of the cooker and the guys chills me out. they brought me on stage during their set and a huge crowd appeared. it was awesome symbiosis.

lots of folks watch the band before me to get a good spot. my fav part of tour is watching the band before me end and then spot the mc chris fans in the audience that then move like matrix agents towards the barriers in front of the stage. its awesome. there are lots of things to hate on, the drama, the bad vibes, the corporate mandate, the death of pop punk. but im still pretty happy. i know it will be over soon.

yesterday i watched big trouble little china and yes the matrix, up in the front lounge. it’s really a nice life. and i feel kinda spoiled and undeserving. so i’ll just keep putting on my show to the best of my abilities. you all seem to like it.

oh and toys are ready. i dunno how i’m gonna sell them. but stay tuned. and i’ll reveal what merch i’ll have at reggie. it’ll be a small amount and hopefully different in some way.

i’ve been listening to gil mantera’s party dream, the album on itunes, non stop. i can’t stop listening to emotion road. it’s one of those songs that get u through everything. i liked it so much i asked gil and co to join me on fall tour, we’ll see. i really hope they can do it. because they are one of the best acts at warped. i wonder if adult swim knows about them because they were made for each other. null sleep wrote and said he was going to graduate school. freeze pop already has dates. the summer is ending, i’m running out of time and my ice cream is melting.

please add: http://www.myspace.com/longway tellm mc sent u and score me more shrimps!

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 49: The Sky, the Stars, the Planets

Filed under: hipster please — @ 2:38 pm

In keeping with this episode’s outer space theme, you will hear me gasp for air throughout my spoke interludes.

Yeah, that’s the ticket!

I apologize in advance for the quality of said interludes; I’ve got some sort of weird, recurrent chest cold, and I had to crank my input volume to compensate for a hoarse voice. The result is rather Vader-ish.

Which, again, seems oddly fitting.

Download Radio Free Hipster Ep. 49: The Sky, the Stars, the Planets [hosting provided by Antisocial] Size: 46.7 MB Running Time: 51:02

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – “Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)”
In space, no one can hear your theme!

Track 1: funky49 – “Starblazer”
I have video of funk performing this cut from his new album live at Nerdapalooza. Whether I ever get off my ass and upload it or not, however, remains a mystery.

Z’s 1st interlude: “Space, flight, and the heavens.”
I sometimes feel as though I’m kind of predictable with my song choices, so I tried to mix shit up this time around.

Track 2: Reality the Musical soundtrack – “This is Reality”
Case in point: this song is both about a fabricated lunar television show and modern reality “stars.” I am so very clever.

Track 3: Kool Keith – “Lost in Space”
And with this track, the streak ends! I’m made it a point over some 49 episodes to never play the same song twice. Different mixes of the same track sure, but never the exact same cut. I mistakenly thought I included “Livin’ Astro” on RFH 3, but it looks like I played this one instead. Witness my downfall!

Track 4: Boneless Children Foundation – “Carl Sagan
I’m really loving their whole Stars For Anyone release. Check it out.

Track 5: MC Lars – “Space Game”
Lars has been talking a lot about his next album lately. I can’t wait to hear it.

Track 6: Ookla the Mok – “Cowboy Secret Space Detective”
I’ve been a little stingy with the filk of late. Please accept this Ookla as restitution.

Track 7: Math the Band – “Order of the Planets from the Sun”
I can’t say enough good things about Math the Band. I have tried but failed. There are still so many nice things to be said!

Z’s 2nd interlude: “You will not be disappointed.”
The UEE still has a few stops left. If it’s coming anywhere near you, GO!

Track 8: The Four Eyes – “Champagne Supernova”
The Four Eyes’ Dave Ninja is expecting a new baby any day now. Preemptive congrats to Dave and Mrs. Ninja!

Track 9: Xoc – “Rubles from Heaven”
The Heartcode compilation is pretty damned amazing. If you have any interest at all in chiptunes, you owe it to yourself to give it a spin.

Track 10: Girl Talk – “Like This”
We needed some sort of mash-up in this podcast, and Girl Talk delivered.

Track 11: Videogame Orchestra – “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Theme”
VGO is probably my favorite chip/electronic outfit at present. I just can’t seem to get enough. Much like Depeche Mode.

Track 12: funky49 – “Mostly Harmless (feat. Ham-STAR)”
Another track from funky49 to help celebrate 49 episodes!

Z’s final interlude: “I don’t know what I’m planning, but I’ll try and make it special.”
This month’s 50th episode is sort of a milestone for me. Not only does it put me half-way to the coveted 100th ‘cast, but it also means I’ve been doing these things for more than two years!

Track 13: Spheres of Chaos – “Skyward
I know the concept of original VGM sometimes confuses people, but Spheres or Chaos are a perfect example of what happens when one infuses new creations with the spirit of classic game music.

So let’s talk episode 50.

I like the idea of a listener-created show. The question is: do enough of you actually care to request tracks? An average ep. has between 13 and 16 songs, so here’s hoping there are that many of you out there.

I’ll make a specific song request post later, assuming some of you seem interested. The only caveat I can see myself attaching is asking that you not request your own stuff. Make your friends do that. ;)

im in my final bus, it’s the beginning of the end of my time here with warped. this bus used to be occupied by lordz of brooklyn, but not everyone survived the summer. everything is stained wood, or some kind of dark brown marble pattern. and there is stained glass and it’s covered in a big jack in box wrap so u can barely see outside of it. it feels like a roving old timey library. except no books. there’s internet and flat screen, direct tv and spacious bunks. free jack in the box if the crew so desires (and they dont.) and the best part no drinkers, only smokers.

thanks to st. alvia cartel for letting me stay for a week. canadians have been the best part of this summer. and i bombed in canada. i hope i really do get to tour with protest. i havent seen them in a few days. the bus douches now have taken to hanging out at their trailer and talking shit. and my blog and i guess broadway calls blogs have become national news because we’re the source of the warped beef this year.

um… no we’re not. we’re here to work. our bus was a piece of shit and we got punished for it. tour hasnt been the same since bway calls and i got split up. we’re on our new buses now. happy to be able to sleep and work, but sad that we can’t finish the gambler part 2 or play call of duty together. support broadway calls. i’m gonna add them to my top. u should too and leave them a comment too, to keep their spirits up. they’re are getting shit from all directions and don’t deserve one iota. go love them! myspace.com/broadwaycalls

gates open in five minutes and then the cattlecade of kids will come a sauntering in. at first i didn’t mind the sun and the kids, all the bikini tops and short shorts. now i try to enter the venue only for my set and signing. i don’t put on sunblock anymore. i dont ride the mongoose in the morning. this summer i fear has weathered me some. i see it on the pics taken of me.

because of the whole girl crushin on roadie thing i was feeling kinding of like yesterday’s news, old unattractive and rejected. and believe it or not pax was on my mind daily. i hate letting my fans down. so i was just feeling low. so was everyone else. there was a general malaise that had washed over the whole tour. rain had been following us for over a week now and it had taken its saturated toll.

i tried staying in contact with katie, texting, trying to enjoy it, but like she said it was bitter sweet. then i met jj who was sidestage during one of my sets. and she said she was gonna be at the bbq. i went to the bbq that night she was a no show but she wrote a note saying she was sorry and she didnt mean to stand me up. stand me up implies date so i’m happily let down this round.

then she miraculously shows up the next day side stage watching my set. she’s really cute, kinda looks like emmy rossum. big eyes that would fill with tears soon enough. i saw her in the lunch line. and then luckily that night at the bbq i found her a third time. and then her friend ditched her. and i got her between the trucks and stole a much needed kiss. i needed to feel, i dunno, worth smooches. there was a smooch deficit and the market needed much revitalizing.

she actually it turned out drove a long way twice to see me, just me. she worked at mcdonalds and was in the marine corps and i was instantly fascinated, because katie was kinda perfect and maybe that’s what my ocd side longs for, but jj was kinda broken, abused even, and i think that might go for me too. we both talked about offing ourselves and for the first time i felt like i was actually really doing something to fix things, fix me. by maybe helping her id be helping myself, talking about how i really feel. i was saying things id never said to anyone.

soldier suicide rates are high in case you didn’t know. there was a defeated air to jj, like maybe she had given up. she hadnt gone overseas but you could tell she’d already been through something here, in training. shudder to think. we walked by reel big fish playing an almost 3 hr after hours set fueled by requests, booze and who know what else, then was a drum off i think in front of the web lab. everything was kinda boring so i walked her back to her car.

we kept walking and walking further into complete blackness. up a hill into nothing. i was beginning to curse the incline as it seemed to never end but we soon found the car by randomly aiming her car keys into the void. finally we saw some lights blinking against a telephone pole and found it in the middle of an empty field. no lights no people, 2.5 sexins.

she drove me down to my bus and we waited for the bus driver he was almost an hour late. as we kissed goodbye he shouted take ur time! im brewing a pot of coffee! so we did but it was still said to say goodbye. she drove for hours home to south jersey. slept one hour and then did her shift at mcdonalds. i left my warped vip pass in her car. so she drove again the next day, right after her shift and brought my pass and then we did it in my bunk which was totally impossible, kinda rude to my hosts, but also maybe the hottest thing ever. she’s physical like me and i don’t just mean doing it. constantly touching and holding hands or each other. i didn’t realize i needed it but i did. every time she kissed my fingers i realized, i need that to happen. i had no idea. she gave me a kiss every time i made her laugh and she hugged me extra tight when i said i was an atheist. she only lives a few hrs from brooklyn. and last night i downloaded jersey girl off of itunes.

our goodbye last night was straight out of casablanca. in between the buses, all of them starting their engines. we just kind of hugged and danced and her head was against my neck and i just kinda hummed stuff. including jersey girl. her mascara starting get on her cheeks and then on mine. kevin lyman walked by and asked if everything was square. i said thanks so much. jonny had gotten all of our stuff on the new bus.

jj and i had one last cuddle session in my bunk. we’re gonna get to see each other on the reggie tour i think. and then i come home mid september and take her out on a date. i didn’t think i’d have anything to look forward to this fall except screening honey i shrunk the kids in texas.

we said good bye and broke apart and then i grabbed her purse and pulled her back and she shook in my arms and cried and i dunno. it made me happy. like maybe id found someone. someone close to home. in lots of ways.

Captain’s Log: Supplemental

Filed under: hipster please — @ 2:20 pm

The Google Alert is an amazing thing; you mention a feature at a particular Web site, one of the staffers from that site gets a message stating that you blogged about it, and they contact you with further information.

I have seen the future, and it is facilitated by an army of ceaseless Googlebots.

That being said, here is an embed of that Frontalot/Negin Farsad piece from OurStage.com that I mentioned yesterday. Watch it in good health.
